Hello all! I hope you are enjoying a bit of sunshine, wherever you are!
I had a wonderful time leading a knicker making workshop for a Hen party in East London on Saturday afternoon! It was great fun! We didn’t have sewing machines, so I prepared some ready-made knickers in advance. The Hen’s chose hipster briefs and Italian bikini briefs in a dark purple organic cotton with mocha colour stretch lace, and they looked beautiful (if I do say so myself! 🙂 ) So, on the day, instead of the usual format where the ladies learn to sew knickers that I have pre-cut for them. I gave a cutting demo and then talked them through the sewing process, with some half made samples to illustrate the different steps. After that we all got busy crafting and creating with our knickers, and delved into my boxes of sewing goodies that were brimming with pretty lace trims, ribbons, bows, lace cut-outs, crystals, beads, sequins etc….Lots of very pretty stuff! For those who wanted to take a pattern home with them, there was a pad of paper and selection of Emiliana knicker patterns for them to trace around and cut their own pattern out. The finished knickers looked amazing! There were multi-layered bow ensembles…appliqued lace cut-outs….an appliqued teapot, which was incredible…and the bride-to-be hand embroidered the date of her wedding onto a heart and then appliqued that on to her knickers….they were all fantastic. Thanks to Inma at The Old School Club for setting it up, and to Mary and friends for choosing the workshop to be part of their Hen do celebrations!! The photos above are examples of how we embellished the lovely knickers on the day. xxx

The Story of Emiliana has now been written by Emma for a chapter entitled ‘Knickers to that!’, which is featured in the soon to be published book “Stories of the Great Turning”. The book is introduced by the wonderful eco-activist Joanna Macy, and contains a wonderful collection of true stories, detailing inspiring, practical grassroots approaches to Sustainability from all over the world that are contributing to the ‘Great Turning’. Emma’s story is one of a transition from ‘uptown’ girl, living the highlife and working as a Lingerie Designer in Hong Kong and China; then turning her back on that life, and turning from ‘uptown’ into ‘upcycler’ after experiencing first hand the damaging effects that Capitalism, conspicuous consumerism and neo-liberal globalisation have on people and the environment.
Stories of the Great Turning will be published in April 2013. Email Emma for info or for a press release: firstname.lastname@example.org
The first Emiliana camisole has been sold and the first workshop has been completed! The lovely ladies that I have been working with love the style, fit and shape of the camisole. We upcycled some unwanted t-shirts into new cami’s by cutting away the sleeves and the neckline and then adding stretch lace, like in the photo above. This one was upcycled from an unwanted t-shirt of my brothers! The great thing with the cami is that you don’t need as much stretch in the fabric as you do with the knickers, so the range of fabrics that you can use is much wider. It still needs to be jersey, like t-shirt fabric, but you’ll find that some jersey’s have stretch in the way that they have been produced, even if they don’t contain elastane.
I have just arranged the following camisole workshops:
Wednesday 27th February – Upcycling Camisole workshop 7pm-9.30pm – Social Fabric, Totnes, Devon
(For this workshop you will bring along an old t-shirt or stretch garment that you would like to upcycle into a new camisole.)
Saturday 30th March – Camisole Workshop – 1.30pm-4pm Makeplace, Norwich, Norfolk
(In this workshop you will learn how to sew a camisole from scratch using new jersey fabric from Anglia Fashion Fabrics.)
I will also be creating make-your-own kits for the camisole, so feel free to email me if you would like to order one. Email Emma on email@example.com
Happy New Year!!! Here we go – for 2013 there has now been a beautiful stretchy camisole added to the Emiliana collection! I upcycled an unwanted stretchy dressing gown to make this one. I used chocolate brown stretch jersey, and a mocha coloured stretch lace for the edging and straps. This camisole uses all the same techniques that you learn when you make up the knicker kit/workshop, so this could be a great second project for you – then you could have a handmade matching set!!! It would make a great bed set too, wear it instead of PJ’s, or underneath them to keep you nice and warm during the winter months. This camisole also looks so pretty on that you can wear it as outwear during the warmer months – then you get to show off your sewing skills too!
If you would like to learn how to make one of your own, either through buying a make-your-kit, or through doing a workshop with me, then feel free to get in touch. Just email Emma at firstname.lastname@example.org xxx
